Week 5 Homework due w/c 10th Dec

1. Individual
Research to find an example of a L2, L3 & L4 film opening on youtube & annotate using the criteria, explain why you have categorised it as this level.

Embed them on your individual blog

Search for "G321 Film Openings" or "AS Media Film Opening"

2. Group:
Watch the L4 example and look at the Parity & The Edge Storyboard (below)

Photograph your Storyboard (22 shots plus) using Rule of 3rds and a variety of shot types, low & high angle as necessary.

Upload these on your blog in numbered order and be ready to upload to Final Cut to create Animatic next week - (here you will add titles etc...)

3. Group:
Find and download a suitable piece of music and sound effects (mp3) for Foley for your Animatic next week - what sounds will need to be emphasised in your sequence?

4. Group:
Edit & Colour Grade Parity. Complete this and upload to group blog for next week

Present this as a Prezi with voiceover commentary and embedded video, images & your collage (each group member must be involved on audio)

  • Identify 3 thriller films from www.imdb.com
  • Click on the 'user rating' section & print screen the graphs for each film
  • Identify Who is the biggest audience (age & gender) for these Thriller films & WHY? Get images of your typical audience members showing their age range, gender & interests
  • Embed video clips from imdb & film posters to demonstrate how the content (violence, male or female protagonist, age of the characters & their occupations, subject matter etc) appeals to who you said the audience is (age & gender) 
  • Go to www.BBFC.org.uk - identify the UK film classifications and what aspects these are affected by. What are the typical certificates for a Thriller & EXPLAIN why?

Homework for due Week 1 Mod 2 - Filmed Presentation

Hello. What an exhausting yet important Module! Well done for getting through it and completing your Preliminary Task - and more importantly for stepping up to the challenges of A Level

Think back to where you are at now:
  • You can shoot professionally to a basic level (Rule of 3rds, 180 deg rule, control the camera)
  • You can edit professionally to a basic level (Final Cut, add titles, trimming, effects)
  • You have completed a shoot outside of my supervision (Dexter) and worked as a team
  • You can create a sound design using Garageband (Falling Down) and sound effects
  • You are in production groups of 3 and have started your individual blog

1. Individual Task: Idea Presentation (Blog)
Your own individual idea for your Thriller - each student to post a Mind Map, Collage & Treatment for a film opening sequence synopsis (individual) with images/video clips of the examples of actual Thrillers you are borrowing from

Create an idea that responds to 1 of the following scenarios




Annotate on the following on your blog post - be prepared to present to the camera on:
  • Characters? (A.D.U.L.T.S. T.H.R.I.L.L.E.R.)
  • What SUB GENRE of THRILLER & what happens?
  • Where is the OPENING SCENE set, what locations? - include photos/images of suitable
  • How will it setting up the CONVENTIONS of a Thriller PLOT?
  • What 3 THRILLER FILMS you have watched have influenced this/ what is it similar to?
Create a Collage of the above and the 3 Thriller films that have influenced this along with clips from www.IMDB.com

This will be presented week 1 by every student on camera

2. Group Portfolio Tasks (Group Blog)
Over the half term you must continue to work in groups and demonstrate your contribution to each group task

Here is the remaining tasks that need to be completed over the 2 week break - you can work on these at a distance emailing each other the information or recording your own sections

Each one has an example - they are High L3 or Low L4 - you can do better than last year's students!

To get L4:

1. How does the film start and what is the plot?
2. What are the key Thriller moments in the film?
3. What is the twist at the end/give away the Mystery (Spoiler)
4. Identify the key aspects of a thriller that are in this film (characters, locations, lighting etc)5. 9 frames that highlight your points carefully laid out (as per art of the title)
5. Embed key scenes from youtube
6. How successfully does the film involve and satisfy the audience - It must be a review of how successful it is as a thriller in your opinion - look at www.rottentomatoes.com for examples of reviews
7. Rate it /5 stars?

Homework 2 Due 11th October Task 2 (Group/Individual)

Complete your Falling Down Sound Design
30 secs each: 0:00 - 2:30 min in your 3's
Add a suitable soundtrack to tell us someting about the character and what could happen next (build suspense and tension) that fits the scene
Export and post to your blog

Individual: Write up a commentary for the post (200 words)
Iconic Sounds for a Thriller - using your Falling Down sequence explain why these sounds are Iconic (recognisable) as Thriller
Justify your decision for the choice of Soundtrack
What does it tell you about the Character and what could happen next?

Homework for Next Week (W/C 24th Sept) Individual

1. Genre Iconography Mood Board
Create a collage of Thriller films showing the key Iconography associated.
  • Props & set design
  • Locations & Settings
  • Lighting & Colours
  • Characters
  • Typical Scenes


This should be a mix of:

  • Film posters/DVD covers of Psychological or Crime or Political Thrillers
  • Capture Film stills from Thrillers Openings post

Remember - NOT horror (no knives or scream masks please!)


THEN comment in why these are recognisable characteristics of a Thriller - look carefully at the Mind Map from last weeks lesson and tie into MYSTERY & SUSPENSE

2. Analysis of Thrillers x (part 1 of 3) Individual
Watch a Thriller Film (There are some in the Library, borrow DVD from me or you can watch online) from the collection linked below
Top 10 Psychological Thrillers
Top 10 Crime Thrillers

Write a SPOILER review (300 words) about how successfully this was as satisfying the audiences pleasure in watching a Thriller
Refer particularly to the characters, the plot (what happens), how it ends, how it kept you guessing, created MYSTERY & SUSPENSE, and if it had a Twist. How successful was this at being a Thriller?

Post this to your blog with the trailer for the film & stills if possible

3. Look through the selection of Thriller Openings & explain to someone you know how you know they are a Thriller Film - what are the audiences expectations from what you have shown them? (Mind Map their responses on www.bubbl.us.com - you will be making this into a video next week)

4. Find a suitable location and photograph it, (don't grab it off the internet) to shoot a Thriller that demonstrates what you have understood this week.



Post All The Above to Your Blog by next week - we will be using it in class and I will be assessing you next weekend.
